The Queensland Audit Office is the independent auditor of the public sector. Our vision is for better public services. Our purpose is independent assurance and insights that support the integrity of government.

Our clients are the state and local government public sector entities we audit and the Queensland Parliament. We also work with many other stakeholders such as industry bodies, accounting standards boards, and academia.

The Auditor-General is an officer of parliament, independent of government and not subject to direction or influence. They are appointed by the Queensland Governor in Council for a fixed, non-renewable 7-year term. We are established under the Auditor-General Act 2009, and are an essential part of Queensland's integrity system.

We provide independent advice and assurance to the Queensland Parliament to support better public service delivery. This helps parliament to hold public sector entities accountable for the services they deliver. Our work helps promote trust and confidence in our system of government. Our services include financial and performance audits, and investigations about waste and mismanagement. This includes providing assurance that there is appropriate stewardship over entities and their management of public resources.

Through our financial audit program, each year we form opinions about the reliability of public sector entity, including local government, financial statements. Our opinions are published in entity annual reports. We prepare reports for tabling in parliament based on the results of our financial audits.

Through our performance audit program, we examine the efficiency, effectiveness, and economy of public service delivery. From each performance audit, we prepare a report for tabling in parliament that contains our findings, conclusions, and recommendations for improving performance.

Our reports are not just about the results of our audits. We may also include insights from across our audits and report on 'best practice' ways that many entities can improve performance and service delivery.

Our work promotes transparency and accountability, and:

  • helps entities to improve their performance
  • provides assurance to parliament that there is appropriate stewardship over public sector entities
  • informs Queenslanders about the public services they receive
  • highlights how entities are using public money.
